INTRODUCTION
Background to the Study
The introduction of business education
was originated by the private indigenous proprietors in Nigeria. According to
Wikipedia (2013), business Education are those teaching that involves teaching
students the fundamental theories and processes of business.
Business education
can also be seen as a study that help in preparing students to become
responsible citizens capable of making the astute economic decision that will
benefit their personal and professional lives.
Generally, business education is one of
the non-vocational practical art areas of general education which includes
studies in economics, consumer education, marketing, accounting, computer,
typing, shorthand business education is therefore designed to develop special
competencies in marketable business skills and technique (Robert 2000), several
levels including secondary education. Approximately 30% of students enroll in
one or more business courses during their high school ensure.
The majority of students at the
University level engage in a business related major. These majors prepare
students for an occupation in business related field and teaching career in
academics.
Based
in undergraduate level business education increase rapidly in the 1900s
throughout the country the modernization and manager needed more formal
education in business concepts. Most school now offer courses in management,
human resources and economics students can choose many activities within those
subject such as global business management and marketing according to Kanu
(2006) stated that, it is the sum total
of knowledge, skills and attitude that are required for successful promotions
and administrating business enterprise.
This study is to indentify business
education and its contribution to national development of Nigeria. Business
education contribution is very important in the various sector of our economy,
even though business education is introduced into the school system but it has
made some impact in the development of the state and the nation.
Business
education is a segment of education, which essentially prepares people for the
skilled work.
The
objective of business education is therefore the production of manpower who
possess the requisite knowledge, skill and attitude of harnessing other
resources and bringing them into a cooperative yielding good services demanded
by the society for the satisfaction of their wants needs of which there are
many such as the managers, supervisors, According
to Decalo and Robbinson (2005) the background of business education development
from, It’s earliest apprenticeship from which they found described in the code
of Hammurabi. Another historian Reiger (2000) associated the origin of business
education to the invention of the Double Entry Bookkeeping. System in 2002 in
Italy and traced and traced its spread and development in England, Scotland,
Ireland and finally United State of American (U.S.A). These historians
maintained that the increasing interest in commerce intensified in America,
proprietor-master conducted classes in their homes, teaching navigation
surveying practical mathematics and “merchant account” Decalo (2005) concluded
that during the first half of the 19th century, vocational business
education was carried out in the form of medianics institution. The placement

Business education which is part of total
education could be accomplished by the way of providing programmes which will
help in preparing individual for entry into employment skills and competencies
that will enable them to advance in the
choice of a career with this, it should be the intellectual infrastructure on
which its technology and development will be build and also involves the
preparation on the functional areas of business in distributive occupations,
merchandising activities advertizing, selling, retailing and wholesaling etc. and
also those that engaged in the clerical functions of book-keeping is
secretarial, clerical stenograph office act.
In Business education, there is a problem
associated with competencies in handling new and sophisticated office
equipments and may not be as serious as the need for efficient and effective
office worker who knows what to do, how to do it and when to do it both
efficiently and effectively so that studies will be physically and mentally
alert.
Statement of the Problem
Although
much is believed to have been contributed in business educational endeavors to
past developmental efforts, the keen research is at same in which better
results could have been achieved on those efforts were more positive are better
directed and articulated.
To
this direction, the researcher wishes to study whether business education has
contributed to national development of Mbaitoli in Imo State or not and if
those who study business education are actually contributing to the development
of Mbaitoli of Imo State especially by teaching the subject when necessary and
also find out the major problem likely to hinder the contribution of business
education to the development of Mbaitoli in Imo State.
Purpose of the Study
The main purpose of this study is to
investigate on business education and its contribution to national development
of Imo State.
1. To
find out the contributions made by business education on economic development
2. To
find out the problems facing business education in our community
3. To
find out the level of achievement already made by business education products
in our social economic life.
4. To
find out if business education has helped in improving the economics of the
society.
Significance of the Study
The
finding of this study will be immense benefit to Business Educators,
government, students, community, parents in the following ways;
Ø The
result of this study will be useful to the developing of business education
skills to different stagies of teaching business education.
Ø It
will also generate innovative, research oriented creative and competence in the
area of specialization among business education students.
Ø Furthermore,
it will be great importance to the community as it will provide up to date
technical knowledge and business skills reigning from school learners to
unemployed individuals in Imo State.
Ø Finally,
the result of the study will be valuable to parents and government.
Research Question
For the purpose of this research work the
following research question has been postulated;
1. What
are the contributions made by business education on economic development?
2. What
are the problems facing business education in our community?
3. What
are the achievements made by business education product in our social economic
life?
4. In
what extend have business education helped in improving the economy in our
community?
Scope of the Study
Considering
the expected benefits devisable from the study. It could have been better to
cover a large area of the State and perhaps the nation but due to limited time
for both the research and submission compiled with financial constraints.
The
researcher therefore is limiting her investigation to Mbaitoli Local government
area in Imo State.
To
bring the study to a manageable size, the researcher wishes to find out the
occupational qualities and skills, which secondary school leavers are supposed
to have in order to be employed easily. The nature of employment in industries
and other establishment and requirements for those vacancies
